Job Action Day Date in the current year: November 4, 2024
Job Action Day was launched in 2008 by the career development and job search website QuintCareers (Quintessential Careers) and continues under the auspices of LiveCareer, a website focused on providing job seekers with the resources, knowledge and expert advice that can help them land their dream job.
The idea behind Job Action Day is to encourage people to pursue their dream career. This doesn’t necessarily mean looking for a new job: for many people, a dream job is a job they love that also pays the bills, and it’s often possible to turn the job you have into your dream job, for example by asking for a raise or promotion.
The best way to celebrate Job Action Day is to take a look at your career path and think about what you need to do to increase your job satisfaction: improve your current job, find a new job, change fields, or start your own business. Once you know what will make you feel happier in your career, you can figure out your next steps. Here are some ideas for what you can do.
Update your resume, CV, and cover letter. Even if you’re not actively looking for a new job, it’s never a bad idea to keep your resume and cover letter up to date.
Find a mentor. People who have already achieved the career path you want can provide invaluable insight into how to achieve similar goals. Consider respectfully asking someone you look up to professionally for a meeting or a piece of advice. You may also want to explore professional mentorship programs that may be available to you.
Attend a job fair. Job fairs are an excellent source of information about the current options and opportunities in your current field, or in the field to which you want to transition.
Make a list of skills you would like to learn. Learning new skills is always useful, even if you’re not planning to leave your current job. It will make you a more valuable employee and an asset to your company, which usually comes with a raise.
Organize a casual professional get-together. Ask a few colleagues to meet for coffee or lunch to discuss your career experiences and aspirations. It’s an informal way to share professional advice and network, which could make your career path a little beat clearer.
Take a break. If you can’t figure out whether you’re unhappy with your current job or just tired, take a vacation or at least a few days off. Once you decompress, it will be easier to figure out if you really need to make a career change.
Even if you’re happy with your current job, it’s good to be prepared for unexpected career hurdles and to keep your options open. Keeping up with the current job market is never a bad idea in our unstable economy, so make the most of Job Action Day by thinking about the ways to improve your career, even if you don’t feel the need to take any concrete steps yet, and by honing your job search skills.
