It is believed, that the first ice creams had fruit flavors, but by the 18th century chocolate and vanilla flavors were quite common. Although chocolate ice cream is second popular flavor after vanilla, it wins the award for being created earlier. The chocolate flavor was born in 1692, when Italians froze hot chocolate.
The frozen chocolate treat is likely brought to America by Thomas Jefferson during the 1780s. Jefferson, as the Ambassador to France, lived in Europe for several years and fell in love with chocolate ice cream. He couldn't help bringing the flavor to the United States. This legend is the most common, but who knows the truth?
