National Power Rangers Day Date in the current year: August 28, 2024

National Power Rangers Day National Power Rangers Day is a fun holiday celebrated annually on August 28. It was established by Hasbro to celebrate a popular entertainment franchise that includes live-action television series, feature films, video games, comics, books, toys, and merchandise.

Power Rangers is an American adaptation of the Super Sentai Series, a Japanese superhero television series and media franchise in the tokusatsu genre noted for its heavy use of practical special effects. It features a team of people with the ability to transform into superheroes in color-coded uniforms.

Super Sentai was adapted for the American audience by Haim Saban. He came up with the idea in the mid-1980s after a business trip to Japan, but it only took off in 1992, when Saban pitched it to Fox Kids president Margaret Loesch, who was familiar with Super Sentai and saw the potential. The series was adapted from Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, the 16th installment of the Super Sentai franchise.

Each Power Rangers series revolves around a team of youths who are recruited and trained by a mentor to morph into superheroes and use special powers, unique weapons, and assault machines called Zords to overcome antagonists. They wear identical spandex suits that are color coded, and each Power Ranger is referred to by their color designation. The color palette is different in each Power Rangers series, but Red and Blue Rangers appear in every team.

The original series, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, premiered on Fox Kids on August 28, 1993 to a great success, although some parents raised concerns about the show being too violent for young kids. The original show aired on Fox Kids for three seasons from 1993 to 1995, during which time it catapulted into popular culture along with a line of toys produced by the Japanese toy manufacturer Bandai.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was followed by Mighty Morphing Alien Rangers and other series set in the same continuity. As of 2024, 973 episodes of 30 television seasons of 22 different themed series have aired. The Power Rangers franchise also includes three films set in the continuity of the television show (including a reunion television special), a reboot film, toys, video games, several series of comics, and Power Rangers: The Ultimate Visual History, a book offering a behind-the-scenes look at the beloved television show.

In 2018, Hasbro acquired the franchise from Saban Entertainment and designated August 28 as National Power Rangers Day to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the premiere of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The new holiday was announced at Power Morphicon IV and was celebrated for the first time on August 28, 2018.

Fans are encouraged to celebrated National Power Rangers Day by sharing their fond memories about the franchise, re-watching their favorite episodes or films, drawing fan art or writing fan fiction, cosplaying as their favorite Power Ranger, and spreading the word about the holiday on social media with the hashtag #NationalPowerRangersDay.
