The koala is an iconic Australian animal found in coastal areas of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria. Because of their distinctive appearance, these endearing marsupials are recognized worldwide as one of the symbols of Australia. The koala is featured heavily in Australian pop culture and is a major draw to the country’s wildlife parks and zoos.

Sadly, the population of wild koalas has reduced significantly over the past decades. The koala is listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and as endangered in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, and Queensland.

The main threat faced by koalas in the wild is habitat destruction caused by deforestation and climate change. According to statistics, they are one of the ten species worldwide most affected by climate change. Global warming leads to increased aridity, heatwaves, droughts, and associated bushfires that are deadly for helpless koalas.

Koalas are particularly vulnerable to bushfires because they are very slow, and eucalyptus trees where they live are highly flammable. When a wildfire breaks out, koalas instinctively seek refuge in the higher branches and succumb to intense heat and flames. In addition, bushfires break up the koala’s habitat, which results in isolation and genetic bottlenecks.

Koalas are also affected by deforestation and urbanization. Their habitat is shrinking due to agricultural land clearing, and living in close proximity with humans and domestic animals endangers them. Dogs and cars kill about 4,000 koalas every year; a study has shown that most koalas that wind up at wildlife hospitals and rehabilitation centers are admitted because of trauma.

In 2016, a group of koala charities and nonprofit organizations, wildlife carers, and concerned individuals designated May 3 as Wild Koala Day to promote koala conservation and habitat protection. The main goal of the observance is to encourage people from Australia and abroad to help koalas in any way they can.

On the occasion of Wild Koala Day, the team behind the observance organizes various events and activities across Australia.
