Global Smoothie Day Date in the current year: October 3, 2024
Smoothies are thick, creamy beverages made by puréeing a bunch of ingredients in a blender. Although there are countless smoothie varieties, most of them contain three main types of ingredients:
A liquid base (fruit juice, yogurt, dairy or non-dairy milk, ice cream).
Fruits and/or vegetables.
Ingredients to boost nutritional value (nuts, grains, seeds, nut butters, protein powder).
In addition to these three main groups of ingredients, smoothies may also contain sweeteners (for example, honey or syrup), spices for additional flavor, or crushed ice.
Smoothie-like beverages are part of many cuisines, but modern smoothies emerged after the invention of the electric blender. They were first introduced by health food stores of the U.S. West Coast around the 1930s, but the word “smoothie” didn’t originate until several decades later. One of the first smoothie companies to use the word “smoothie” was Smoothie King, founded by Steve and Cindy Kunhau in Kenner, Louisiana in 1973.
As we’ve already mentioned above, there are many kinds of smoothies for you to choose from depending on what you want from your smoothie: some are sugary and sweet and would make a perfect dessert, some consist primarily of fruit and vegetables, which makes them a perfect source of vitamins and dietary fiber, and some are packed with proteins and can replace an entire meal.
Of course, you can’t live on smoothies alone, but they can be a great addition to your diet. For people who struggle with eating their fruits and veggies, smoothies are a fun and easy way to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their diet. If you need to increase your protein intake, smoothies can help with this too.
The person behind Global Smoothie Day is Rhea Mehta, a toxicologist and health innovator with a PhD in Molecular Toxicology and Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of Toronto. After years of suffering from digestive issues, Dr. Mehta solved them by changing her diet and lifestyle. These changes included regular consumption of nutritious and easy to digest smoothies. She launched Global Smoothie Day to encourage people to learn more about the health benefits of smoothies and give them a try.
Of course, the best way to celebrate Global Smoothie Day is to drink smoothies. You can go to your favorite smoothie bar or discover a new one, make smoothies at home (don’t be afraid to experiment with new ingredients, flavors and flavor combinations), or even throw a smoothie-themed party for your friends. And don’t forget to post about the holiday on social media with the hashtag #GlobalSmoothieDay to spread the word.
Global Smoothie Day is not the only smoothie-themed holiday. If you live in the United States, you can also celebrate National Smoothie Day on June 21, and if you live elsewhere, you can observe it too! Even though the holiday originated in the United States, smoothie lovers from around the world are free to celebrate it as well.
