Beer Can Appreciation Day Date in the current year: January 24, 2024
A drink can, also known as beverage can or beer can because beer was the first drink to be sold in cans, is a metal can designed to hold various liquids such as beer and other alcoholic drinks, carbonated soft drinks, energy drinks, fruit juices, teas, herbal teas, etc.
The first canned goods were produced in the early 19th century, when Bryan Donkin and John Hall opened the world’s first commercial canning factory in London. However, it wasn’t until more than a century later that canned beer became commercially available.
It all began in 1901, when the American Can Company was founded. When canned foods turned out to be a success, the company started experimenting with beer canning. However, they had to put their experiments on the back burner due to the passing of the 18th Amendment and the beginning of the Prohibition era in the United States in 1919.
After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the American Can Company reached out to the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company that had taken a hard hit due to Prohibition. American Can offered Krueger to provide beer canning equipment for free on the condition that Krueger would pay for it if canned beer turned out successful.
On January 24, 1935, Krueger’s Cream Ale and Krueger’s Finest Beer in cans became available to the public in Richmond, Virginia. Canned beer was an instant hit, and soon sodas and other drinks became available in cans, too. Early cans were made from tin-plated steel; the production of aluminum beer cans started in the 1950s. Today, beverage cans are ubiquitous in most parts of the world.
Most beverage cans produced in the United States are made of aluminum and have an internal coating that keeps the metal from contacting with the liquid inside and oxidizing. The top of a beer can is made from a harder alloy than its body. Beer cans have a number of advantages over glass bottles: they are cheaper to produce, lighter, easier to transport safely, and take up less space. Another great thing about beverage cans is that they are recyclable.
It is unclear who came up with the idea to celebrate Beer Can Appreciation Day, but it is great that someone did because drink cans are one of those inventions that don’t get the attention and appreciation they deserve. The date of the holiday was chosen to commemorate the day when the Krueger Brewing Company started selling beer in cans.
There are many ways to celebrate Beer Can Appreciation Day. You can learn interesting facts about the history of the drink can and share them with anyone who is willing to listen, enjoy beer or soda from a can, buy a six pack of craft beer, take empty beer cans that have accumulated in your house to a recycling facility or use them to make crafts, start collecting beer cans, and spread the word about the holiday on social media with the hashtag #BeerCanAppreciationDay.
