Day of Local Self-Government in Ukraine Date in the current year: December 7, 2024
The date of December 7 was chosen to commemorate the Law “On the Local Councils of People's Deputies of the Ukrainian SSR and Local Self-Government” that was adopted on this day in 1990. Day of Local Self-Government was established to recognize the accomplishments of local self-government bodies and encourage their further development.
According to the Constitution of Ukraine (Chapter XI), local self-government is the right of a territorial community to independently resolve issues of local character within the limits of existing legislation. Borders of local self-government include village, settlement, city, district, and oblast (region) councils.
Just like any other professional holiday in Ukraine, Day of Local Self-Government is not a non-working holiday unless it falls on a weekend. It is not celebrated with pomp, most employees of local self-government celebrate their professional holiday with their co-workers and family.
