Stock Market Employees Day in Ukraine Date in the current year: June 12, 2024
A stock market, also known as share market or equity market, is the aggregation of buyers and sellers of stocks representing ownership claims on businesses. The development of a modern stock market in Ukraine began in 1991, following the country’s independence. The first organized stock exchange in Ukraine was the Ukrainian Stock Exchange. It was officially registered in October 1991 as a ZAO (closed joint-stock company).
The formation of the Ukrainian stock market became possible thanks to the emergence of relevant legislation such as the laws of Ukraine On Securities and Stock Exchange, On Privatization Securities, On Banks and Banking, and On State Regulation of the Stock Market of Ukraine.
In 1995, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Ukrainian parliament) adopted the Resolution on the Concept of Functioning and Development of the Stock Market in Ukraine. Ukraine’s stock market is regulated and supervised by the National Securities and Stock Market Commission, which was established by a presidential decree on June 12, 1995.
As of 2020, the main stock exchanges in Ukraine were the PFTS Stock Exchange (“First Stock Trading System”), the Ukrainian Exchange, UICE (Ukrainian Interbank Currency Exchange), INNEX Stock Exchange, the Perspektyva Stock Exchange, and the Ukrainian Stock Exchange.
Securities traded at the stock market of Ukraine include shares, government and municipal domestic bonds, corporate bonds, treasury bonds, savings certificates, government and compensation certificates, housing checks, investment certificates, and external bonds.
President Viktor Yuschenko established Stock Market Employees Day in March 2008 to highlight the significant contribution of stock market employees in speeding up economic reforms and creating a real market economy, as well as the role of stock market in attracting investments and improving the investment climate in Ukraine.
The date of the holiday was selected to commemorate the founding anniversary of the National Securities and Stock Market Commission. Like most other professional holidays in Ukraine, Stock Market Employees Day is primarily celebrated within the professional community. It is not a day off unless June 12 falls on a weekend or on the Monday after Pentecost, which is a legal holiday in Ukraine.
