International Day for Monuments and Sites Date in the current year: April 18, 2024

International Day for Monuments and Sites International Day for Monuments and Sites is an annual observance held on April 18. It was officially established by UNESCO in 1983, following the initiative of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

ICOMOS is an international association of professionals that works on conservation of the archaeological and architectural heritage. Among its members are archaeologists, historians, architects, engineers, town planners, geographers, anthropologists. They work together to improve heritage preservation.

International Day for Monuments and Sites focuses on raising public awareness about the diversity and vulnerability of the world's cultural heritage and drawing attention to the efforts required for its protection and conservation.

Every year, the ICOMOS International Secretariat chooses a global theme for the day to be highlighted on the occasion. National committees are encouraged to hold events linked to the chosen theme. Events and activities that may be organized on this day include, but are not limited to, discussions, exhibitions, competitions, award ceremonies, educational activities at schools and colleges, radio and television broadcasts.
