Hydrometeorological Service Workers' Day is listed as one of the professional days in Ukraine. It's annually observed on November 19 since 2003, when it was established by President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma.The Meteorological Service of Ukraine was founded in 1921. In 1929 it merged with the Hydrological Service and formed the Hydrometeorological Committee.
The Hydrometeorological Center of the State Emergency Service is the main meteorological organization in Ukraine. It conducts meteorological researches, implements the state policy in the areas of hydrometeorology, environmental monitoring and hydrometeorological activities. Over 5,000 people are employed to run the service.
Present-day Ukraine is a member of the World Meteorological Organization, an intergovernmental organization with membership of 191 countries. This organization was founded as the International Meteorolgocial Organization in 1873, and in 1950 it was renamed and established by the United Nations.
