Firefighters’ Day in Latvia Date in the current year: May 17, 2024
The first city fire brigade in Latvia was created in 1845 on the basis of the Daugavpils police fire brigade. The first volunteer fire department in Riga was established 20 years later. On May 17, 1865, the Riga volunteer fire and rescue service brigade successfully put out their first fire. This day is considered the birthday of the Fire and Rescue Service of Latvia.
Latvian Firefighters’ Day was first celebrated on May 17, 2011. On the occasion of its professional holiday, the State Fire and Rescue Service of Latvia conducts open days throughout the country. Anyone can visit one of the fire departments to learn more about the work of firefighters and rescuers. Visitors can ask any questions, try on the firefighter gear, and take pictures.
In some cities, there also are other events such as fire truck and equipment displays, music concerts, and various contests. One of the most important events is held at the Latvian Firefighting Museum in Riga. It is an award ceremony where the most distinguished firefighters from all over the country are presented with special awards for their hard work and dedication.
