The Indonesian National Revolution broke out in 1945, when Indonesia declared its independence from the Netherlands. The battle of Surabaya was one of the most important battles of the war because it helped galvanize international support for the independence of Indonesia.

On October 27, 1945, British troops entered the city of Surabaya. The next day, Indonesians attacked the British and killed 200 hundred soldiers. Thus the battle broke out.
