National Sports Day in Thailand National Sports Day is celebrated in Thailand on December 16. The holiday was established in 1986 to commemorate the day when King Bhumibol Adulyadej won gold medal in sailing in 1967.

King Bhumibol is an accomplished sailor and boat designer, that enabled his participation in the Fourth Southeast Asian Peninsular Games held in Bangkok, Thailand in 1967. He won a gold medal for sailing, that he shared with his daughter HRH Princess Ubol Ratana.

The day when Bhumibol won the competition was designated to be National Sports Day in 1986. Celebration of this holiday supports the development of national sport and helps inform public about the importance of sport for everyday life. People are encouraged to participate in different sports competitions and events.

Annually numerous award presenting ceremonies of the sportspersons are organized on this day. The Thai sports associations organize exhibitions dedicated to sport and people enjoy watching games and performances.
