National Night Out in the USA National Night Out is a special event that is held in the USA every year on the first Tuesday in August. This event was started in 1984 in order to make communities safer.

Earlier nobody was afraid to leave the doors unlocked, porch lights on and open door to a strangers ringing the bell. However, those times passed and the communities around the USA became more dangerous. Observation of National Night Out encourages people to build a safer and cooperating community.

The event was started by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984. The first event took place on August 7, 1984 with 2.5 million members from 400 communities in 23 states participating. Nowadays all states of the USA participate in this event on the first Tuesday in August. Only two states, Florida and Texas, are allowed to move the event to the first Tuesday in October to avoid hot weather.

National Night Out is organized by block watchers, non-profit organizations, companies and police departments. The events vary from simple backyard parties to full-scale festivals, like in Columbus, Ohio. The festival organized there includes live music, food and entertainment.
