International Animation Day Date in the current year: October 28, 2024

International Animation Day The International Animated Film Association (ASIFA) designated October 28 to be International Animation Day. This event took place in 2002 to celebrate anniversary of the first public performance of Théâtre Optique.

Théâtre Optique was a moving picture performance presented by Charles-Émile Reynaud on October 28, 1892. Reynaud's Théâtre Optique was outshone by the Cinematograph of the Lumière brothers in 1895. Reynaud was driven to bankruptcy, however his invention projected first moving images to the audience and this event entered the history of optical entertainments.

Celebration of International Animation Day is organized in more than 50 countries around the world. Every year ASIFA creates an original poster, that is adapted for each countries, involving works of famous animators. This guarantees that this event will attract public attention worldwide.

Cultural institutions organize workshops, exhibitions and other events helping promote the art of animation. Everyone can learn new techniques of animation, using painting, drawing, clay, sand, puppets and computer.
