Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows in Slovakia Date in the current year: September 15, 2024

Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows in Slovakia The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is one of the important religious observances in Slovakia. This day annually falls on September 15. This is a national non-working holiday.

Our Lady of Sorrows is one of the titles given to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The title was given due to the seven sorrows, or seven events, in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

This feast originated in Cologne in 1423 and over the centuries it developed into the form of present-day veneration. The feast is observed in Slovakia on national level since 1966, when the Pope officially assigned the Blessed Virgin Mary to the patroness saint of Slovakia.

The feast begins in the morning on September 15 with a solemn mass in all Catholic churches across the country. The churches of Slovakia are crowded on this day, but the main place of pilgrimage is the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Staré. This church attracts people from all over the country on this day. The pilgrimage ends only in the evening on September 16.
