Previously Montenegro was a part of the Ottoman Empire, holding autonomous rights. Under the rule of Nicholas I Montenegro gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. Due to his diplomacy skills political relations were established with the Empire in 1878 and 30 years of piece followed.

Kingdom of Montenegro was proclaimed on August 28, 1910. After the end of the Balkan War in 1912 and 1913 the common border between Serbia and Montenegro was established. In 1914 Montenegro allied with Serbia, but their union was defeated by Austria-Hungary in 1916.

Nicholas I fled Montenegro to Italy and then to France during the occupation. Subsequently Montenegro was liberated by the Allies in 1918. Nicholas' return was banned and Montenegro merged with Serbia in 1918.
