Birthday of Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway Date in the current year: July 20, 2024

Birthday of Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway Birthdays of the members of the Norwegian Royal House (the king, the queen, the heir apparent and their spouse, and the hair apparent's eldest child) are official flag flying days in Norway. For instance, the birthday of Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway, is celebrated on July 20.

Prince Haakon Magnus was born on July 20, 1973 to Crown Prince Harald (future King Harald V of Norway) and Sonja Haraldsen. He served in the Royal Norwegian Navy and studied at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Oslo, and the London School of Economics.

Haakon became Crown Prince when his father ascended the throne in 1991, following the death of King Olaf V of Norway. In 2001, he married Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby, a commoner and single mother. Many Norwegians disapproved of his choice of a spouse, not because Mette-Marit was a commoner (Haakon's mother, Queen Sonja, was a commoner, too) but because she had a child from a previous relationship.

Crown Prince Haakon was the Regent of Norway from November 25, 2003 to April 12, 2004 and from March 25, 2005 to April 1, 2005 due to his father's health problems. In 2006, he established an independent, non-political organization Global Dignity, along with Pekka Himanen and John Hope Bryant.
