Workers of Natural Gas and Petroleum Industry Day in Ukraine The second Sunday in September is Workers of Natural Gas and Petroleum Industry Day in Ukraine. This professional day was established by the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk in 1993.

Petroleum industry started its development in Ukraine in the 18th century. By the beginning of the 20th century about 2 million tons of crude oil were extracted annually. Natural gas industry started its development only by the second half of the 20th century.

The rapid development of the petroleum industry started in Ukraine after the end of World War II. Finding of new oil fields led to building of new plants. Also since 1945 Ukraine started supply Poland with natural gas, thus marking the beginning of world's natural gas export.

Present-day natural gas industry and petroleum industry of Ukraine involves only about 1% of population. Observation of this professional holiday of the workers of these industries is very important. It gives the authorities an opportunity to encourage people to chose this profession for further development of these industries.
