FAO Day in Iraq Date in the current year: April 17, 2024

FAO Day in Iraq April 17 is FAO Day in Iraq. This holiday honors the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It's observed since 2003.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN is the leading agency, that deals with the problems of hunger and agricultural development. The idea of such organization emerged in the end of the 19th century. It was advanced by the US agriculturalist and activist David Lubin. In 1943 President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt called a United Nations Conference on Food and Agriculture. Its representatives formed a permanent organization for food and agriculture and adopted its constitution in 1946.

On this day, the Iraq Ministry of Agriculture traditionally holds a special meeting to discuss issues of food security and laws and bills relating to food production in the country. Environmental crises, like drought, that regularly affects the region, are also discussed during the meeting.

As a rule, employees of agricultural sector get a day off on FAO Day.
