National Underwear Day Date in the current year: August 5, 2016

National Underwear Day New Yorkers annually celebrate National Underwear Day on August 5. This holiday promotes wearing your underwear in public. Usually, we wouldn’t do it, but on August 5 everything is possible.

National Underwear Day was started by a privately held online retailer of men's underwear and women's apparel Freshpair, that is headquartered in New York City. The company was founded in 2000 and in order to promote its underwear, Freshpair founded the holiday in 2003. The first celebration took place in the same year.

The main events of National Underwear Day take place in heavily congested area of New York, including City Hall, Stock Exchange and Times Square. Over ten years of celebration the company organized different events, including massive underwear giveaways, runaway show and pop-up shop in Columbus Circle.

The largest event took place in 2013, when Freshpair advertised to break the Guinness World Record for largest gathering of people in their underwear. Unfortunately, the company couldn't break it. However, the participants had a great time!
