An apple dumpling is an apple-filled pastry with cinnamon. Sometimes raisins are also added. Apple dumplings are a very popular food among the Amish. This pastry can be served for breakfast or as a dessert after meals. Apple dumplings can be topped with vanilla ice cream or sweet sauce before serving.
To celebrate the National Apple Dumpling Day, try your hand at cooking this sweet treat that will remind you of your grandma's kitchen. In a bowl, combine 3 cups all-purpose flour and 1 tsp salt. Cut in 1 cup shortening until crumbly. Gradually add 1/3 cup cold water, tossing with a fork until you have a ball of dough. Divide into 8 portions, cover and put in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Peel and core 8 medium granny smith apples. Roll each portion of dough into a square. Place an apple on each square. Place 1 tsp cinnamon-sugar and 1 tsp butter in the center of each apple. Bring up corners of dough to the center of each apple and pinch to seal.
Place dumplings in a greased baking dish. Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar. Bake about 50 minutes at 350 °F. Serve with butterscotch sauce.Remind me with Google Calendar
