One of the earliest peach ice cream recipes can be found in the famous cookbook The Virginia House-Wife by Mary Randolph, first published in 1824. The recipe calls for peeled “fine soft peaches perfectly ripe” that are sprinkled with sugar and chopped into a smooth pulp with a silver spoon. The peach pulp is then mixed with an equal amount of cream or rich milk and some sugar and frozen.

However, peach ice cream was not particularly common when the recipe was published because the process of making homemade ice cream was labor-intensive and time-consuming. It involved constantly stirring the ice cream as it froze to prevent crystallization and maintain a smooth texture. Because of this, ice cream, including peach ice cream, was mostly consumed in wealthy households with enough servants and access to ice.

This changed in 1843 when American inventor Nancy Johnson patented the first hand-cranked ice cream freezer, dramatically reducing the labor required to make smooth ice cream. Her invention transformed ice cream from a luxury into a dessert that ordinary households could prepare, making it much easier to produce seasonal fruit flavors, such as peach, during the summer harvest.

In the 20th century, ice cream transitioned from a homemade specialty to a widely available commercial product. As industrial ice cream production and refrigeration technology developed, many dairies introduced peach ice cream as a seasonal flavor during the summer.

Although peaches are generally available year-round today, many companies still produce peach ice cream only during the summer months. Because of this, peach ice cream remains closely associated with summer, farmers’ markets, and fresh local peaches, especially in peach-producing regions of the United States.
