Imaginate is a unique organization in Scotland which aims to promote, develop and celebrate theatre, dance and other forms of performing art for children and young people. It strives to provide engaging, innovative and inspiring experiences, giving children an opportunity to develop their creativity and make the most of their true potential.
The inaugural Edinburgh International Children’s Festival was held in 1990 as the Imaginate Festival. Every year, it showcases high quality Scottish and international performances to an audience of around 10,000 children, their families and teachers. Since its inception, the festival has welcomed performing artists from Denmark, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and other countries.
The main goals of the festival are to introduce Scottish children and young people to the best pieces of performing art from around the world and to promote Scottish performers internationally. Thanks to participating in the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, Scottish artists have got invitations to perform in some of the world’s best venues such as the Sydney Opera House and the New Victory Theater (New York City’s first and only theater with a year-round programming for children and family).
Over the years, the festival has established itself as one of the best platforms for local and international artists where they can showcase their talent and skills, see and discuss each other’s work, and participate in professional development activities, including special training, mentoring sessions and other projects. Programmers from all over the world come to Edinburgh to see over 120 shows of the very highest standard.
