The Cathedral Square is located right in front of the neo-classical Vilnius Cathedral (Cathedral Basilica ot St Stanislaus and St Ladislaus of Vilnius). It is a key location in the public life of Vilnius and the site of many public events such as fairs and markets, military parades, open-air concerts, exhibitions, and New Year’s firework displays.
Every winter, the Cathedral Square hosts the official Vilnius Christmas market. A 25-meter-high Christmas tree decorated with LED lights, outdoor nativity scenes, wooden stalls and various decorations transform the square into a winter wonderland that offers plenty of entertainment to locals and tourists alike.
The fair features over 50 wooden stalls where merchant offer local crafts (amber jewelry, glass items, ceramics, candles, woolen socks and other handmade Christmas gifts), an impressive selection of Christmas decorations, local delicacies and Christmas treats (sweet chestnuts, gingerbread, artisan pastries, marzipan, crepes and donuts, honey, homemade cheeses), and hot drinks to keep you warm (hot chocolate, herbal tea and mulled wine).
Of course, the Vilnius Christmas Market also offers entertainment for visitors of all ages, including Santa Claus and his reindeer, fairground rides, an ice skating rink, 3D light shows, special events and attractions for children, and more. If you happen to be in Vilnius in December, you should absolutely visit the Christmas market to get into the festive spirit.
Along with the Christmas market at the Cathedral Square, there are smaller markets held throughout the city, including the International Christmas Charity Bazaar and Christmas Market at the Town Hall Square.
