The main goal of the Supertoon International Animation Festival is to introduce the latest Croatian and international animated shorts to a wide audience. The festival also strives to provide its participants and guests with a platform for communication and exchange of ideas and experiences.
SUPERTOON was founded in 2010 by Slave Lukarov, Peter Trebotić, Ivan Klepac, Vanja Daskalović, Stjepan Mihaljević and Zvonko Barišić. The first festival was held in Bol, a resort town on the island of Brač that is known for its famous beach the Zlatni Rat (Golden Cape). In 2013, the festival was moved to Šibenik where it has been held ever since. Although some of the original founders have left the festival board, their contribution is much appreciated.
The main venue of the SUPERTOON Festival is the Croatian National Theater (Hrvatsko narodno kazalište Šibenik). However, some films screenings and other events take place at other venues such as the Mala Loža Open Air Cinema, the Gorica Open Air Cinema, the city library, the Azimut night club, the City Hall Cinema, the Šibenik City Museum, the St Krševan Gallery, and more.
The Supertoon International Animation Festival hosts a film competition divided into five categories: Short Animated Films, Short Animated Films for Children, Animated Music Videos, Animated Commercials, and Student Short Animated Films. Winners are selected by an international jury consisting of five industry professionals. The festival also permits various Croatian and international institutions or organizations to present their own awards to outstanding films and filmmakers.
Alongside its competition program, SUPERTOON hosts non-competition screenings (retrospectives, panoramas, theme screenings), film workshops, lectures, seminars, exhibitions and other events and activities for attendees of all ages and backgrounds.
