Comic Con Russia was created by the committee of the Russian Game Developers Conference that also organizes the country's largest annual exhibition of computer and video games IgroMir. The inaugural Comic Con Russia was held as a part of IgroMir 2014 on October 2–5, 2014. Both events took place at the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Center, one of the largest expo centers in Russia. The event attracted over 150,000 attendees over four days.
Just like most other pop culture conventions, Comic Con Russia doesn't focus solely on comic books and related arts, like its name suggests. It also features movies, television, animation, manga, amine, science fiction, fantasy, video games, tabletop games, and other pop culture genres and elements. The organizers' goal is to create a fun and entertaining show for everyone interested in modern pop culture.
The venue that hosts Comic Con Russia is divided into several thematic zones. For example, the exhibitor zone features fandom and corporate stands. It also includes a shopping area where attendees can purchase various souvenirs and merchandise. The cinema zone hosts movie and TV show screenings, sneak-peeks and previews. Panels with special guests and a cosplay contest take place in the main hall.
Since the inaugural Comic Con Russia, the organizers have invited famous entertainment guests. For example, Comic Con Russia 2014 featured American actor Misha Collins, known for his role as the angel Castiel on the TV series Supernatural, and British comic artist David Lloyd best known as the illustrator of the graphic novel V for Vendetta written by Alan Moore.
Comic Con Russia typically lasts four days, Thursday through Sunday. The first day is reserved for industry professionals, press and media, while during the following three days the convention is open to everyone who's purchased a ticket.
In 2021, the event was held online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
