Originally, Carnival is a Western Christian festive season that occurs before Lent. Today, however, many cities and countries host multicultural celebrations that are not part of the pre-Lenten celebrations but are still called carnivals. One of such celebrations is the Harare International Carnival held in the capital of Zimbabwe.

The Harare International Carnival was launched in 2013. Originally held in May, it was moved to September in 2015. The festival was created by a group of enthusiasts who wanted to bring people of various beliefs, religions and opinions together, giving them an opportunity to celebrate their unity in diversity. Another goal of the carnival is to build stronger relations with other countries whose cultures are showcased during the event.

The Harare Carnival was inspired by two iconic Carnival celebrations, the Brazilian Carnival in Rio de Janeiro and the Caribbean Carnival of Trinidad and Tobago. The Carnival’s main highlight is a vibrant procession that features dancers in colorful costumes, musicians, and other performers from more than 20 African, Asian, European, and South American countries. According to the organizers, the Harare International Carnival is the biggest street party in Africa.

Music is a vital part of the Harare Carnival. While Afro-Caribbean carnivals typically focus on traditional Caribbean music genres, such as calypso, soca and zouk, the Harare Carnival mainly features African music. Much of Zimbabwean music incorporates traditional African instruments such as hosho, mbira, and drums. Despite its focus on local music, the Carnival embraces music from around the world due to its international line-up of participants.

Along with parades and musical performances by local and international artists, the Harare International Carnival offers other exciting events and activities, including beauty pageants, street parties, food stalls, contests and games, jazz concerts, and more. The event is supported by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority whose goal is to promote Harare and Zimbabwe as a regional and international tourist destination.
