Sergei Diaghilev, usually referred to outside Russia as Serge, was a Russian art critic, patron and ballet impresario. He is best known as the founder of the famous Ballets Russess which is widely regarded as the most influential ballet company of the 20th century. Diaghilev spent his childhood in Perm and there is the Sergei Diaghilev Museum in the city. Perm also hosts a performing arts festival dedicated to Diaghilev.
The International Diaghilev Festival (previously known as “The Diaghilev Seasons: Perm – Saint Petersburg – Paris”) was founded by the Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theater in 2003. The festival quickly became one of the most significant cultural events in Perm and arguably in Russia. A truly international event, it attracts talented artists from different countries.
Although Diaghilev is best known as a ballet impresario, he was also interested in and supported opera, fine arts, theater, and publishing. Reflecting Diaghilev’s multi-faceted personality, the festival features all forms of art. Its rich and diverse program includes opera and ballet, dance and theater performances, art exhibitions and installations, chamber, symphonic and jazz concerts, and a lot of other events for attendees of all ages and backgrounds.
Since 2003, the festival has presented the Diaghilev Award. It is considered one of the most prestigious performing arts awards in Russia. The award is presented to an original theatrical production that premiered during the preceding calendar year. The festival also hosts the Diaghilev Readings, an international cultural symposium for art critics, theater historians, philosophers, philologists and other experts in the field of culture.
