The Bogotá International Book Fair was founded in 1987 as part of a countrywide literacy campaign. The fair aims to promote reading as well as retail and wholesale products and services of the publishing industry. It is part of a massive campaign to promote literacy and a meeting place for national and international publishing industry professionals.
Over the years, it has grown to become one of the most influential and well-known publishing events in Latin America along with the Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico and the Buenos Aires International Book Fair in Argentina. Every year it draws readers, writers and publishers from all over Colombia and abroad, offering them a rich and diverse program of cultural events and exciting activities for attendees of all ages and backgrounds.
The Bogotá International Book Fair has become a major platform for hundreds of Colombian and foreign publishers and authors where they can showcase new books in front of a wider audience of book lovers. The program of the fair includes a large book exhibition, book presentations and demonstrations, educational events (lectures, workshops, seminars, etc.), public readings, live performances, and more.
The book expo is divided into several sections including National and International Publications, Children’s and Youth Literature, Technical and Scientific Books, Universities, Graphic Industry, etc.
Each edition of the fair features a guest country or region whose literature and publishing industry are heavily featured throughout the event. It is common for book fairs around the world to choose a Guest of Honor in order to help local publishers and booksellers to forge contacts with foreign publishers and copyright owners. Past Guests of Honor at the Bogotá International Book Fair include Peru, Portugal, the Netherlands, and other countries.
