Global Day Against Pain Date in the current year: October 17, 2026

Global Day Against Pain The Global Day Against Pain is an annual observance held on October 17, though some organizations prefer to hold events on the third Monday of the month. It was launched in 2004 as a joint initiative of the International Association for the Study of Pain and the European Pain Federation, with the support of the World Health Organization.

Pain is our body’s way of telling us that something is wrong, so it is hard to deny that it plays an important role. Pain is the first major symptom in many health conditions, as well as one of the leading reasons people seek medical care. However, just because pain is often useful does not mean we should simply tolerate it.

Chronic pain can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, extending beyond physical discomfort. Unlike acute pain, which usually improves or decreases when the underlying cause is addressed, chronic pain persists or recurs for months. It can limit one’s ability to work, sleep, walk, perform household tasks, maintain social relationships, and participate in everyday activities. While medications can offer some relief, prolonged use can cause serious side effects. Furthermore, many patients lack proper access to chronic pain treatment, particularly in developing and least developed countries.

The first Global Day Against Pain was observed on October 11, 2004. It was co-organized by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and the European Federation of IASP Chapters (EFIC), with the World Health Organization acting as a co-sponsor.

The original campaign emphasized the need for effective pain management and universal access to pain relief, especially for chronic pain. The campaign’s motto was “The Relief of Pain Should Be a Human Right”. The inaugural Global Day Against Pain sought to bring the attention of healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public to the fact that pain is not just a symptom, but a significant public health concern.

Since then, the date of the Global Day Against Pain has been changed to October 17. However, some sources still claim that it is observed on October 11, based on the initial observance. Additionally, some organizations choose to hold Global Day Against Pain events on a different day in mid-October. For instance, the French association Alliance VITA holds its event on the third Monday in October.

Despite the confusion over the date, the main idea of the Global Day Against Pain has remained unchanged for over two decades since its inception. Its goal isn’t simply to encourage people to seek medical attention when they experience pain. Rather, the day aims to raise awareness of chronic pain as a healthcare problem and to highlight the importance of improving access to pain relief and treatment worldwide.

The Global Day Against Pain should not be confused with European Pain Awareness Day, which was launched by the EFIC in 2024 and is observed annually on the third Wednesday in October. Occasionally, the two awareness days may fall on the same day.
