National Technology Day in Libya Date in the current year: June 1, 2026

For a decade, Libya’s economic and technological development was stifled by the political and humanitarian crisis and civil war that occurred after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. The country’s economy began to recover in 2020 when the civil war ended with a permanent ceasefire. Since Libya’s economy is heavily dependent on the petroleum industry, a major development priority is diversifying the economy to ensure long-term stability and prosperity.

Information technology is one of the most promising sectors, both on its own and as a means of supporting the development of other sectors. The non-profit organization Libyan Technology Foundation (originally named the Libyan Information and Communications Technology Organization) was established in August 2020 to raise tech awareness and promote the development of the IT and communications sector in Libya.

In April 2021, the foundation submitted a proposal to the newly formed Government of National Unity to designate June 1 as National Technology Day. This day is intended to highlight the importance and potential of the Libyan technology sector, celebrate achievements in the IT sector, and promote its further development and digital transformation.

National Technology Day in Libya is intended for a broad audience, including local technology-related institutions and companies, decision-makers, potential investors in technology startups, technology specialists working in various fields (from robotics to video game development), civil society organizations, community leaders, technology students, and anyone interested in technology and its impact on daily life.

Events and activities are held at schools, colleges, workplaces, and various tech-related companies, as well as government and municipal institutions, co-working spaces, and technology clusters across Libya. These events include lectures, workshops, discussion sessions, exhibitions, summits, and forums. They are important not just for raising technology awareness among the general public but also for developing the country’s technology sector because they create networking and cooperation opportunities.

Although Libya’s tech sector is still relatively small, it has grown over the past few years, especially in sectors such as telecommunications, fintech (particularly digital payments and banking infrastructure), and enterprise IT. Libya also has a startup ecosystem, but it is underdeveloped even by regional standards due to a lack of predictable regulations, mature venture capital networks, and accelerators.

The country’s tech sector faces several constraints, including a lack of infrastructure, undercapitalization, and dependence on government funding and political stability. Additionally, many technically skilled Libyans prefer to work for foreign companies, resulting in a shortage of employees. One of National Technology Day’s main goals is to address these challenges and find solutions.
