Although May 10 is generally accepted as the date of World Move for Health Day, events and activities can be held on another day, typically the closest weekend, to encourage greater participation. World Move for Health Day events and activities typically include organized walks or runs, recreational sports in parks and other open spaces, school-based physical activity programs, public awareness campaigns, and announcements about policies related to urban design or active transportation. The campaign’s main idea is to encourage people to incorporate physical activity into their everyday lives in any way they can.

Many people associate physical activity with losing weight or building muscle, but this is an incomplete view. Everyone needs physical activity, even if they don’t need to lose weight or build muscle. Studies have shown that regular exercise reduces the risk of chronic diseases, improves sleep quality, boosts mood, and enhances overall well-being. The key is knowing your limitations and choosing the type of physical activity that best fits you.

  • Consult a healthcare professional before starting an exercise routine. If you have health issues or have been injured while exercising in the past, it is best to consult a professional before adding exercise to your daily routine. This will help you find the safest way to exercise.
  • View exercise as a social activity if that helps. If you don’t like exercising but enjoy meeting new people, use that to your advantage and make physical activity part of your routine. For example, join a recreational sports team or a dance class.

The WHO recommends 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week for optimal health, but you can gradually work up to that number. Just take the first step and ease yourself into it!
