Day of Science in Kazakhstan Date in the current year: April 12, 2016

Day of Science in Kazakhstan Day of Science is annually observed in Kazakhstan on April 12. This observance was established by Presidential Decree in 2011 and the first celebration took place in 2012.

According to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the first celebration of Day of Science coincided with the completion of realization of the first year of the new law on science. This law provided the basis for building of a new national scientific system. Particularly, a new branch of finance and administration was introduced in the field of science.

Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences, founded in 1946, is the main scientific organization of the country. The central office of the Academy is located in Almaty. Professor Murat Zhurinov is its incumbent president since 2003.

Apart the Academy of Sciences, the first scientific institutions in the country appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. These were seed-growing and agricultural research stations. The Institute for Sanitary and Bacteriology opened in 1925 in Almaty and Kazakhstan branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR opened in 1932. The latter war reorganized in 1938 and after World War II the independent Academy of Sciences was established.
