Indonesian Game Day Date in the current year: August 8, 2025

Video games were introduced to Indonesia in the mid-1980s with the arrival of imported consoles. Since then, Indonesia has grown to become the largest gaming market in Southeast Asia, with over 43 million active gamers — nearly half of all gamers in the region. It is therefore not surprising that Indonesia has a growing video game industry that contributes approximately $1.8 billion to the national economy.
Notable Indonesian game development companies include Agate International, Digital Happiness, Drydock Dreams Games, GameChanger Studio, Lentera Nusantara, LYTO, MassHive Media, Mintsphere, Mojiken Studio, Niji Games, OZYSOFT, Pikselnesia, Rolling Glory Jam, SEMISOFT Studio, Stairway Games, StoryTale Studios, Toge Productions, Touchten Games, and others. The country also has many indie developers. As of 2016, an estimated 1,000 local developers were active in Indonesia. Additionally, the French video game company Gameloft has a studio in Yogyakarta.
Notable video games developed in Indonesia include:
- A Space for the Unbound (adventure)
- Coffee Talk and Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly (visual novels)
- Coral Island (farming simulator)
- DreadOut (survival horror)
- Fallen Legion (RPG)
- Legrand Legacy: Tale of the Fatebounds (RPG)
- Rage in Peace (platformer)
- Samurai Taisen (visual novel/MMORTS)
- Sentou Gakuen (visual novel, currently closed)
- When the Past Was Around (point-and-click adventure)
Despite high demand, the Indonesian video game industry faces challenges such as competition with foreign developers and widespread video game piracy. According to statistics, most new video game studios in Indonesia go out of business within five years due to various factors.
The Indonesian government has taken measures to help the country’s video game industry overcome these challenges. For instance, in 2014, President Joko Widodo established the Creative Economy Agency, which was charged with promoting the growth of Indonesia’s creative industries, including gaming. Subsequently, the agency was transformed into the Ministry of Creative Economy, which performs the same function.
Indonesian Game Day was first celebrated on August 8, 2024. It was established as part of the implementation of Presidential Regulation No. 19 of 2024 on the Acceleration of National Game Industry Development, which was issued in February of that year. The holiday’s main goal is to promote Indonesian-made games, boost the national gaming industry, and expand its reach in domestic and global markets.
The inaugural celebration featured events hosted by the Indonesian government and industry stakeholders, including showcases of local titles and a group gaming session. Leading Indonesian game developers and the Indonesian Game Association (the trade association of the Indonesian game industry) actively participated in the celebration.
