World Oceans Day Date in the current year: June 8, 2024
World Oceans Day was created in 1992, when Canada proposed the holiday at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The holiday was celebrated only unofficially, till the United Nations officially declared it in 2008.
Observation of World Oceans Day honors the oceans and celebrates the products the oceans give us. The list is immense and it includes seafood and marine life for aquariums and pets. At the same time observation of this holiday raises public awareness of oceans pollution and drastically dwindling population of the majority of species. All these problems are caused by human activity and over-consumption.
The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network annually hold different events and coordinate observance of World Oceans Day since 2003. They organize different activities, like beach cleanups, art concerts, educational programs, film festivals and seafood events.
