Day of the Seafarer Date in the current year: June 25, 2024

Day of the Seafarer Day of the Seafarer is annually observed on June 25. This observance is one of the UN international days and it was established under initiative of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The International Maritime Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations Organizations. It enables cooperation and information exchange on technical issues, that are connected with international commercial shipping.

IMO was established on March 6, 1948 in Geneva, but it came into force only on March 17, 1958. 171 states are members of this organization, excluding 3 associate members. Its headquarters is situated in London, about 300 people form its staff.

Day of the Seafarer was established in 2010. The decision was adopted by member states of IMO at conference held in Manila. Establishment of this observance was very important, since it recognizes the importance and unique contributions made by seafarers to international seaborne trade, world economy and civil society as a whole.
