International Civil Aviation Day Date in the current year: December 7, 2024

International Civil Aviation Day International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated on December 7. It was instituted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 1994. Two years later, the UN General Assembly recognized it as an official United Nations observance.

International Civil Aviation Day was established to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. This document established ICAO, a specialized UN agency responsible for the coordination and regulation of international air travel. ICAO was officially formed in 1947, when the Convention went into effect.

ICAO is charged with codifying the principles and techniques of international air navigation and fostering the planning and development of international air transport to ensure safe and orderly growth.

The global celebration of civil aviation aims at raising public awareness of the importance of international civil aviation in the socioeconomic development of Member States and recognizing the role of ICAO in promoting the regularity, efficiency and safety of international air transport.

Each year, ICAO announces a new theme for International Civil Aviation Day. Participants are encourage to hold event that reflect the current year's theme.
