Prosecutor’s Office Employee Day in Armenia Date in the current year: July 1, 2024
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia is the core of the country’s public procurator system, which consists of the Prosecutor General’s office with its multiple departments, military prosecutor’s office, city of Yerevan prosecutor’s offices, regional prosecutor’s offices, garrison military prosecutor’s offices, and territorial divisions.
The history of the modern public procurator system in Armenia dates back to 1918. After the collapse of the Russian Empire, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia declare their independence and began the formation of their own legislative, executive, and judicial systems. The Prosecutor General’s Office of the First Republic of Armenia was created as part of these reforms. It began to operate on December 6, 1918 within the framework of the country’s judicial system.
Sadly, the First Republic of Armenia was short-lived. It was invaded by the Red Army in late 1920 and became part of the Soviet Union in 1922. The Soviet authorities created their own legal institutions first in the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic, which Armenia was part of alongside Azerbaijan and Georgia, and then in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, founded in 1936. During the Soviet era, the Prosecutor’s Office of the Armenian SSR was a subdivision of the Prosecutor’s Office of the USSR.
The formation of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Armenia began after the collapse of the Soviet Union. For the first four years of the country’s independence, the prosecution authorities of Armenia acted on the basis of the Law of the Soviet Union “On Prosecutor’s Office”. The situation changed when the first Constitution of Armenia was adopted on July 5, 1995. Article 103 of the constitution created the grounds for the establishment of an independent prosecutor’s office, which began to operate three months later.
The Law “On Prosecutor’s Office” was adopted on July 1, 1998 and came into force on January 12, 1999. The anniversary of its adoption was declared an official professional holiday named Prosecutor’s Office Employee Day. It has been celebrated annually since 2003.
Like other professional holidays in Armenia, Prosecutor’s Office Employee Day is not a non-working holiday unless it falls on a weekend. On the occasion of their professional holiday, all people working in the public procurator system of Armenia accept congratulations from their colleagues, family and friends, and those who’ve distinguished themselves the most over the past year are presented with state awards and memorable gifts.
