International Being You Day Date in the current year: May 22, 2024
The history of International Being You Day can be traced back to 2011, when Dr. Dain Heer published his bestseller titled Being You, Changing the World that provides a set of practical tools which can help readers discover their true selves and learn to live their lives with more authenticity and freedom.
Over the years, the book has been translated into multiple languages and adapted into a series of seminars and workshops conducted by trained facilitators, launching the Being You movement. Ten years after the release of the book, Dr. Heer created International Being You Day to encourage people all over the world to explore and discover the gift of who they are and what they are capable of.
International Being You Day is exactly what it says on the tin: it is a day when you can just be you without the weight of societal expectations holding you down and learn to love yourself for who you truly are.
International Being You Day invites people to embrace their own uniqueness, as well as stop comparing themselves to others and rely on other people’s judgment, inspires them to be who they want to be instead of who they are expected to be, and empowers them to choose chasing their dreams over simply fitting in.
International Being You Day is the holiday for all the misfits who feel like they don’t fit in anywhere, for the dreamers who are not afraid to follow their dreams even when others try to discourage them, for the people who are tired of being judged and want to become less dependent on other people’s opinions, for the perfectionists who are frustrated with never being good enough by their own standards, and for anyone who feels the need to be more accepting of themselves.
There are a lot of ways to observe International Being You Day. You can choose whichever one you are most comfortable with because no one expects you to change your life in an instant. The road to self-discovery and acceptance can be long, but that’s okay as long as you eventually reach your destination.
If you want to start small, simply give yourself a break from judgment and don’t judge yourself for anything during the day. The next step would be celebrating your uniqueness. For example, you can think of something that makes you uniquely you and write a post or make a video about it. You don’t even have to share it with others if you’re not ready, but sharing is a great way to encourage others to join the celebration.
If you’ve always wanted to do something but never dared to do it or just couldn’t find the time, International Being You Day is the perfect day to cross that item off your bucket list. And if you don’t have a bucket list, this is the day to start one! And, of course, don’t forget to spread the word about the holiday on social media with the hashtags #InternationalBeingYouDay and #BeingYouDay.
