International Day of Living Together in Peace Date in the current year: May 16, 2024

International Day of Living Together in Peace On December 8, 2017, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring May 16 the International Day of Living Together in Peace.

The concept of living together in peace is based on recognizing and accepting differences, having the ability to listen to, respect and appreciate others, and the ability to live in a peaceful and united way. The International Day of Living Together in Peace was created to regularly mobilize the international community’s efforts to promote understanding, inclusion, tolerance, peace and solidarity.

The key to a sustainable world of peace, solidarity and harmony is the desire of people from different countries to live and act together, united in their differences and striving to respect and understand each others’ cultural and religious diversity. The International Day of Living Together in Peace is supposed to promote choosing dialogue, negotiation and working together over confrontation and hostility.

The General Assembly encourages Member States to organize educational and public awareness-rising events and activities in accordance with their cultural traditions and customs. Such events are designed to promote mutual respect and co-operation to help ensure peace and sustainable development.
