International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict Date in the current year: November 6, 2024

International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict is annually observed around the world on November 6. This observance was initiated by the United Nations in 2001 in order to recognize the effect of a war on the environment.

Every military conflict involves a number of causalities, that people count. But nobody considered the effect of a conflict on the environment. Polluting water and poisoning land, killing animals and cutting down forests, all of these are left unnoticed, when we think about the effects of the military conflicts on humanity. The United Nations General Assembly calls on people to recognize the way every military conflict affects the nature.

The United Nations Environment Program has found that about 40% of all conflicts leading to a war were caused by the natural resources, like gold, diamonds, oil, timber, soil, water. Exploitation of the natural resources in war must be stopped. And observation of this day ensures that prevention of the conflicts is an action towards improvement of the environment.
