Saint Dominic Day in Managua The first ten days of August in Managua are filled with colorful processions and other events dedicated to Saint Dominic (Santo Domingo), the city’s patron saint. August 1 and 10 (the 1st and the 10th day of the festivities) were even declared official holidays and non-working days in the capital of Nicaragua.

Dominic de Guzmán, also known as Dominic of Caleruega and Dominic of Osma, was a Spanish priest and preacher. He is best known as the founder of the Order of Preachers that is often referred to as the Dominican Order in honor of its founder. Dominic was canonized in 1234 by Pope Gregory IX. His feast is observed on August 8.

In the late 19th century, a small statue of Saint Dominic was founded in Managua. Surrounded by mysticism, this discovery prompted to proclaim Dominic de Guzmán the patron saint of Managua. Very soon a tradition to celebrate Saint Dominic Day with massive festivities was born. Currently, the first ten days of August in Managua are dedicated to Saint Dominic.

The celebration of Saint Dominic Day in Managua begins at dawn on August 1. After a solemn mass in the Las Sierritas Parish Church, the statue of Saint Dominic is taken to the Santo Domingo Church in a colorful procession that marches through the center of Managua. The following days are filled with joyful festivities that take place throughout the city. On the final day of the festivities, August 10, there is a mass in the Santo Domingo Church, followed by a procession that returns the statue back to the Las Sierritas Church.
