Father's Day is a holiday created to honor fathers and celebrate their role in society. It was conceived by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, United States. She wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own after the death of his wife. Sonora was the eldest child and the only daughter, she helped her father raise her younger brothers.

The first Father's Day celebration in the United States was held on June 19, 1910. Currently, most countries observe the holiday on the third Sunday in June, but some states have adopted their own date. For example, Luxembourgians celebrate their Father's Day on the first Sunday in October instead.

Father's Day in Luxembourg is celebrated with little pomp. Here the holiday is much less commercialized than in some other countries, so there are no obnoxious advertisements or tacky greeting cards. Nevertheless, many children take a minute to congratulate their fathers and thank them for everything they have done.
