Father's Day is a holiday that celebrates fatherhood and paternal bonds. It was created to honor fathers and recognize their role in society. Father's Day in its modern form was conceive by Sonora Smart Dodd, a daughter of the American Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own. The holiday was first celebrated in 1910.

In the USA, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. This date was adopted by many other countries, but not Indonesia. Indonesian Father's Day is celebrated on November 12. Sadly, the holiday is not very popular among Indonesians, and many of them are not aware of its existence. It is not typical for Indonesian children to give their fathers presents or greeting cards.

In Indonesian society, men traditionally are main providers for wives and children, they maintain the position of head of the household. Fathers are very respected and often keep some distance from their children, who are required to approach and address them formally.
