International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons Date in the current year: September 26, 2024

International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons One of the UN international days is observed on September 26. The UN General Assembly proclaimed September 26 to be International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear WeaponsI. Appropriate observances are held since 2014.

One of the UN main objectives is total elimination of nuclear weapons in all countries around the world. Despite the efforts made by the United Nations organization, about half of the world's population lives in counties that possess nuclear weapons or are members of nuclear alliances.

There was a number of multilateral and bilateral agreements on disarmament, but as of 2014 not a single unit of nuclear weapons wasn't eliminated. About 17,000 units of such weapons are held in the arsenals of various countries. Therefore, the problem of nuclear elimination is acute now.

As a result, International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons was established by the UN General Assembly in 2013. Observation of this day aims at raising public awareness of the urgent nuclear weapons disarmament and its benefits for humanity.
