International Day of Sport for Development and Peace International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is an annual United Nations observance held on April 6. It was established by the General Assembly in 2013 and first observed in 2014.

Sport is one of the oldest forms of human activity. Although most sports involve a competition element, sport is known for uniting people rather than sowing discord among them. Sports can contribute to an atmosphere of understanding and tolerance and help foster peace.

Sport is a valuable tool for development, education and peace. It's role in promoting understanding, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, health, and social inclusion is undeniable. Intrinsic values of sport such as discipline, fairness, teamwork and respect for opponent are understood all over the world. The rules of sports games are universal for all participants, no matter where they come from.

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace focuses on raising awareness about the aforementioned values and the importance of sport for advancement of peaceful coexistence and social cohesion at the local, national, and international levels. The United Nations encourage sports organizations at all levels to organize appropriate events on the occasion.
