Mother's Day in Luxembourg Date in the current year: June 9, 2024

Mother's Day in Luxembourg Mother's Day in Luxembourg (Mammendag) is celebrated on the second Sunday in June. Although it is not a public holiday, it is widely celebrated across the nation.

Mother's Day in its modern form was first celebrated in the United States in 1908. It was created by Anna Jarvis who held a memorial to honor her mother. The holiday was not supposed to be commercialized, but it has nevertheless become a Hallmark holiday.

American Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Many countries have adopted the same date, but some celebrate their Mother's Day on other days. For example, in Luxembourg the holiday is observed on the second Sunday in June.

On this day, Luxembourgian children give their mothers presents. Schoolchildren typically make small gifts in school, and adults buy their mothers flowers and chocolates, and/or take them out to dinner. Some husbands congratulate their wives with flowers, a homemade breakfast or nice meal at restaurant.

Mother's Day has recently received some criticism because it implies that women are valued more once they become mothers. While this sentiment is understandable, we should keep in mind that everyone has a mother that gave life to them and therefore deserves their gratitude.
