National Sports Day in Qatar National Sports Day is a public holiday in Qatar celebrated on Tuesday in the second week of February each year. It was first held in 2012.

Qatar is one of the few countries in the world to dedicate a national holiday for sports. National Sports Day was adopted by the Emiri Decree issued by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The holiday focuses on the promotion of healthy lifestyle among the population of the country.

Sheikh Tamim has been an avid promoter of sports for a long time. In 2005, he founded Qatar Sport Investments. A year later, he was the chair of the organizing committee of the 15th Asian Games that were held in the capital city of Quater, Doha.

Under his guidance, Qatar became the host of the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Sheikh Tamim is the chairman of Qatar Olympic Committee and a member of the International Olympic Committee.

On National Sports Day, numerous public events and sports activities are held. This national holiday is intended to promote sports and physical education, raise awareness about the importance of sport as a means of creating a physically and psychologically healthy community. All sport federation and clubs in Qatar are encourage to host events on the occasion.
