National Youth Day in India January 12 is National Youth Day in India. This observance is celebrated annually since 1985.

January 12 is primary a birthday of Swami Vivekananda, an Indian monk who is regarded as a patriotic saint. He is known for his introduction of the Indian philosophies of Yoga and Vedanta to the Western world.

The Government of India declared National Youth Day in 1984 and chosen the date of Swami Vivekananda birthday because his philosophy and ideas would be a great source of inspiration for the Indian youth.

Celebration of National Youth Day in India includes special worship, fire ritual (homa), devotional songs, meditation, religious discourses and vesper evening service (sandhya-arati). This day is always observed at schools and colleges with different speeches, music, recitations, processions, seminars, presentations and competitions in essay-writing. Also different activities of competitive and non-competitive nature are held.

Sometimes different people participate in activities that promote Indian youth in the fields of education, culture, art and hope to generate moral values with enlightenment of inner soul.
